Everything is larger in Texas, but Denton is known for close-nit feel. Located north of the DWF metroplex, Denton is famous for its historic downtown square and is home to the University of North Texas, UNT, which one of the top rated music schools. Denton is known as the “Little D” of the metroplex compared to the “Big D”, which is Dallas. Denton is lush with local music life and independent restaurants. The Arts and Jazz Festival and the North Texas State Fair together bring crowds of over three hundred thousand people to the city every year.
Denton is also characterized as a college town. The two universities located in Denton, the University of North Texas and Texas Women’s University (TWU) accumulate over forty five thousand enrolled students. Educational services account for a large portion of the city’s economy as a result of the universities’ growth. Exploring around Denton is easy with public transportation. Providing commuter rail and bus services, Denton County Transportation Authority serves the population of Denton.
In addition to their prestigious music program, Denton’s University of North Texas offers a pleasant campus with friendly squirrels running about. UNT has a lot to offer. Known for a liberal arts school with a famous jazz band, the University of North Texas has no shortage of team spirit when it comes to the gridiron. Winning the championship at the 2017 Conference USA and appearing in 3 consecutive bowl games, the university’s football team, the Mean Green, occupies the Apogee Stadium with fans’ cheers.
Speaking of going green, the campus also strives to be environmentally conscious as possible. In the university’s gym, the treadmills and other work out equipment power the building. Providing a wind-powered source, three windmills can be spotted from campus. A lovely community garden that grows fresh produce can also be found amongst the dorms.
The University of North Texas has a very pretty campus, but Denton’s other university, Texas Women’s University, shines when it comes to the school ground’s aesthetics. TWU’s campus features a renowned nursing program, The Little Chapel in the Woods, botanical gardens with flourishing ponds, Dr. Bettye Myers Butterfly Garden, and their beautiful greenhouse.
Denton’s community aspect makes it stand out as a close-knit town. Around UNT and on the square, you can find a diverse bar scene and charming beer gardens. One of Denton’s favorites, East Side, also features a food truck yard called Austin St. Truck Stop. When the Denton Community Market comes into season, local small businesses, artists, farmers, and food trucks set up booths in the Mulberry St. field off the downtown square and serves as a great family-friendly activity.
